2015 HALL Eighteen Seventy-Three Cabernet Sauvignon
"The Eighteen Seventy-Three is sourced from the eastern side of the Napa Valley, where HALL has vines planted on the Vaca Range. The nose shows massive dark fruits with creme de cassis, Turkish coffee and a graphite edge. The palate shows wonderful earthy edge with tremendous dark fruits and chocolate flavors that delight the senses. This will age marvelously over the next two plus decades."
A simple but complex creation, this wine is deep ruby in color and opens with dominant aromas of crushed rocks, ripe blackberries, and a hint of cracked pepper. The weighty palate is structured by fine, powerful, tightly-wound tannins and balanced acidity. Integrated French oak aromatics of toasted coconut, and cinnamon with a hint of clove carry through the lengthy finish.
IN 1873, CAPTAIN WILLIAM PETERSON came to Napa and established a pioneering winery on our St. Helena property. Throughout the 1930’s and 40’s, the site grew to become Napa’s most important winery, producing nearly 40% of its entire vintage. The fruit for our “Eighteen Seventy-Three” hails from the rugged mountain slopes that frame Napa Valley. Power and individuality underscore this wine, a deliberate intent to commemorate the trailblazing spirit of Napa’s first vintners.
|Varietal Composition||99% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot|
|Barrel Aging||24 Months in 70% New French Oak|
|Vintage Notes||An unseasonably warm spring brought early bloom and bud break. Temperatures cooled in May causing grape shatter, which resulted in uneven fruit set and further reduced an already low crop yield. As a consequence, vineyard crews worked even more diligently during verasion thinning the clusters to maintain even ripening. The growing conditions, attention to detail in the vineyards, plus a final pass through optical sorting equipment at the winery make the quality of the vintage extremely high.|
