2019 HALL Jack's Masterpiece Cabernet Sauvignon
Critic Review
"Blended to be a more robust, mountain-driven counterpart to the Kathryn Hall bottling, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Jack's Masterpiece blends fruit from Mount Veeder, Atlas Peak, Sacrashe and Montagne. Aged in 75% new French oak (mostly Taransaud), it delivers scents of cassis, herbal shadings like bay leaf and sage, cedar, dark chocolate and vanilla. It's full-bodied, firm but ripe and velvety, then shows more of a silky, dusty edge on the finish."

"...blue fruits in its bouquet of blueberries, mulberries, violets, and spicy oak. A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, this full-bodied, concentrated, incredibly textured 2019 can be drunk any time over the coming two decades or more."
93 Points | Wine Spectator, James Molesworth
"Dark, compact and slightly muscular in feel now, this has a core of dense black currant, acai and fig preserves laced liberally with singed cedar, bittersweet cocoa and warm earth. A flash of iron through the finish provides a nice counterpoint."
94-96 Points | Robert Parker Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown | Barrel Score
"Deep garnet-purple colored, it slowly unfurls to reveal dark fruited, broody notes of crushed blackcurrants, baked plums, tar and new leather with hints of wild sage, charcoal and fertile loam. The taut, muscular, full-bodied palate has a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and earthy."
The 2019 Jack’s Masterpiece is powerfully aromatic with effusive notes of blackberry, 5-spice, black pepper and cocoa on the nose. The palate is brooding and opulent; full of deep dark flavor, that is supported by notes of graphite and spicy oak. The finish is intense and focused; showcasing the power of Napa Valley's premiere hillside vineyards.

Jack’s is blended at the same time as Kathryn Hall, with different components being selected for the stylistic goal of the wine. Our Jack’s Masterpiece will typically come from many vineyard sources and appellations, but tends to be dominated by hillside fruit. The goal here is dark black fruit, power, chewy tannin, and a focused palate. The blend can be described as having blue and black fruits on the nose – blackberry, and black cherry with hints of wet stone or pencil lead. The palate is dark and brooding with dense tannin and structure.

Vintage Notes | Our 2019 growing began with ample rainfall and lingering soil moisture. A warm, extended summer saw very few extreme heat events, with foggy mornings setting the stage for vibrant and expressive wines. The long, relatively mild finish to the season helped to preserve freshness and balance in the fruit with hang time that allowed for impressive color, structure and tannin. This is an exceptional vintage defined by well integrated acidity, dense texture, and great depth. |
