2022 HALL Jack's Masterpiece Cabernet Sauvignon
Critic Review
"The 2022 HALL ‘Jack’s Masterpiece’ Cabernet Sauvignon is mainly sourced from Diamond Mountain with a small portion coming from the Rainin Vineyard. The wine is a tannic, chiseled monster that will need a few years to tame. Black currant cordial, espresso grounds, black forest cake and suggestions of Cuban cigar all come together magically on the palate. The wine is massive and dense yet shows loads of mouth-watering acidity..."

"Darker currants, plums, leafy tobacco, chocolate, and truffly earth notes emerge from the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Jack's Masterpiece, a rocking 2022 that has medium to full-bodied richness, a ripe, round, layered mouthfeel, nicely polished tannins, and a great finish. It's a forward, sweetly fruited, yet still concentrated, balanced, impressive 2022 that will drink beautifully for two decades."

"Deep garnet-purple colored, it strides out with up-front scents of baked black cherries, dried mulberries, and plum pudding, opening out to touches of garrigue, charcoal, and tobacco. The full-bodied palate offers approachable, nicely managed tannins and compelling freshness to match the generous fruit, finishing long and opulent."

Our 2022 Jack’s Masterpiece is powerful and layered with open aromas of black cherry, cassis, graphite and black pepper. The palate is dense, dark, richly structured and full of blackberry flavor, accompanied by notes of crushed rock and dried sage in the background. A balanced and lengthy finish is backed by concentrated tannin that will age for decades to come.

Jack’s is blended at the same time as Kathryn Hall, with different components being selected for the stylistic goal of the wine. Our Jack’s Masterpiece will typically come from many vineyard sources and appellations, but tends to be dominated by hillside fruit. The goal here is dark black fruit, power, chewy tannin, and a focused palate. The blend can be described as having blue and black fruits on the nose – blackberry, and black cherry with hints of wet stone or pencil lead. The palate is dark and brooding with dense tannin and structure.

Vintage Notes | Ample winter rain, followed by temperate and dry conditions through March gave us a good start to the vintage. The spring and summer months were consistent and warm, resulting in small but healthy canopies and balanced vines. Labor Day came with a curveball from Mother Nature in the form of a prolonged heat wave that accelerated harvest at many of our vineyard sites, followed immediately by much cooler weather and a bit of rain. This refreshing slow-down allowed the remaining grapes to hang a bit longer, yielding beautifully balanced fruit and polished tannin. Overall the 2022 vintage is fresh with pure, concentrated flavors. |
