2022 HALL Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon
Critic Review
"I loved the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall, a darker, rich, rock solid 2022 that has some upfront appeal yet still brings good density, depth, and structure. Blackcurrants, darker plums, iron, black olive, and truffly notes all shine in this pure, polished, elegant Cabernet, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, elegant mouthfeel, sweet yet present tannins, and a great finish. This benefits from air, so don't be afraid to give it a decant if drinking any time soon..."

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is made from 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it's very closed at this youthful stage, revealing slow-coming scents of crème de cassis, blueberry pie, and preserved plums, plus hints of candied violets, Indian spices, and tar. Full-bodied, concentrated, and impactful in the mouth, the voluptuous fruit is well supported by firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and decadent."

"The 2022 HALL ‘Kathryn Hall’ comes from a range of sites including the Sacrashe, Carpenter as well as the Cook, Stagecoach and Beller Vineyards. This shows plenty of mid-palate richness and an opulent texture with beautiful fresh dark fruits. This is elegant, seamless wine that is already drinking really well. This is an amazing achievement in a generally difficult vintage that is best consumed now and over the next ten plus years to come."

The Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon is the pinnacle of our blending efforts each year. The exalted Sacrashe vineyard takes center stage, and is the basis of this blend. The vineyard contributes the mouth-coating richness and complexity, offering deep, dark earthy cassis flavors and powerfully dense tannins. From there, we search out complementary vineyards, usually from the most regarded mountain appellations, to create balance, symmetry and finesse in the wine. Lastly, we introduce vineyards with profound depth and decadence to heighten the voluptuousness and opulence that have become a hallmark character of our flagship wine.

Vintage Notes | Ample winter rain, followed by temperate and dry conditions through March gave us a good start to the vintage. The spring and summer months were consistent and warm, resulting in small but healthy canopies and balanced vines. Labor Day came with a curveball from Mother Nature in the form of a prolonged heat wave that accelerated harvest at many of our vineyard sites, followed immediately by much cooler weather and a bit of rain. This refreshing slow-down allowed the remaining grapes to hang a bit longer, yielding beautifully balanced fruit and polished tannin. Overall the 2022 vintage is fresh with pure, concentrated flavors. |
