Meet the WALT Winemakers
Steve Leveque, Director of Winemaking
At Robert Mondavi winery, where Steve worked for many years leading the winemaking team, he focused on overseeing the viticultural and winemaking operations, concentrated in the esteemed Carneros region of Napa and Sonoma counties. In addition to these renowned appellations, he also worked with cooler climate vineyards in Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Barbara counties.
Much of Steve’s expertise comes from working with over 20 different clones and field selections of Pinot Noir from a myriad of different sites, soils and terroirs. Always focused on detail, his viticultural directives have been driven by the highest standards – low yields, balanced vines, perfectly ripened flavors and tannins. In the winery, time-honored techniques along with the most extreme attention to gentle-handling ruled his approach – sorting every berry, gravity feeding grapes, native primary and malolactic fermentation, no rackings, no filtration.
